Space Cover #219: Fifty Years of Women in Space Fifty years ago last week (Okay, for you cynics – better late than never! :)), Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to fly in space. Launching on June 16, 1963 aboard Vostok 6, she spent three days in orbit on a tandem flight with Vostok 5, landing on June 19. The cover above is a June 22. 1963, Moscow postmarked first-day-of-issue for USSR stamps Sc #2750 – 2752 that were issued to commemorate the tandem Vostok 5/6 flight. Tereshkova graciously signed the cover for me at an autograph show in New Jersey in 2005. Who else has some neat Tereshkova/Vostok 6 covers? Maybe some of the "club cachets" for her flight (that's a whole story in itself!)? Or other neat covers that tie-in to women in space? Let's post 'em here! And if you need someone to host your cover image for posting, please send it to me in an email. Glad to do it!
